Intense Snake Rescue at Horse Riding Stable | Cobra Hiding in Log!
Welcome back to another episode of Snake in the Hoed, the channel that takes you deep into the world of snake rescues in Hoedspruit, South Africa. Every week we follow Tim, a dedicated snake handler and wildlife conservationist, and Pep, cameraman and reporter, as they respond to emergency calls about some of the most dangerous snakes in Africa. SPOILER ALERT! In this episode, things got really intense. We received a call from a local horse riding stable (manege) in Hoedspruit. The staff had spotted a snake being chased by the stable’s cat, and they were terrified that it might be a young Black Mamba – one of Africa’s most feared and deadly snakes. By the time we arrived, the snake had already disappeared into a large old stump lying on the ground. At first glance, the suspicion of a Black Mamba seemed plausible, but once the snake stuck its head out, Tim quickly identified it as a Mozambique Spitting Cobra. This is another extremely dangerous venomous snake, known for its ability to spit venom accurately into the eyes of its perceived threats, causing temporary or even permanent blindness if not treated quickly. What followed was one of the most difficult rescues we’ve had in a long time. The Spitting Cobra had wedged itself deep inside the hollow log, making it almost impossible to reach. We had to use everything we could: crowbars, water hoses, and a lot of patience. It turned into a true battle of wits between us and the cobra, and this episode shows just how much effort it takes to safely remove a venomous snake without harming it or the people around. About the Mozambique Spitting Cobra: Since this episode is all about this species, here are some key facts: -Scientific name: Naja mossambica -One of the most common venomous snakes in Southern Africa -Can grow up to 1.5 meters long -Known for spitting venom up to 2–3 meters with incredible accuracy -The venom is cytotoxic, causing swelling, pain, and in severe cases, necrosis Despite their reputation, these snakes only spit or bite when threatened – most of the time they just want to escape. - The Snakes in the Hoed channel is a collaboration between Tim, a highly experienced professional snake handler from Wildlife Safety Solutions, and Pep, a passionate YouTuber and wildlife enthusiast from the channel Pep in the Bush.
