The first part of my multi-part special on the topic of "Natural Incubation versus Artificial Incubation" is all about preparing for the future chicks. While natural-incubating hen Klara has to move her nest and eggs to her own home, the artificially incubated chicks are hatched in the incubator. I'll show you how to cane hatching eggs, explain why some hatching eggs have a better chance of development in an incubator, document how chicks hatch from the eggs, and show you the chicks during their first two days of life. The common thread throughout the entire special will be the ongoing comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of artificial incubation and natural incubation. Although I am personally a big advocate of natural incubation, there are also clear advantages of artificial incubation throughout the video. KEY FACTS ABOUT MY ARTIFICIAL INHABITATION: It was a semi-automatic Janoel incubator for up to 24 eggs. Incubation temperature permanently 37.8 °C The humidity cannot be precisely adjusted on this very simple device, but can be roughly controlled using two differently positioned "water channels," so that there is more humidity at the beginning and end of the incubation than in the middle part (please always refer to the instructions for your device and obtain specific information). I felt like everything would have been too humid towards the end of the incubation with this device if I had followed the instructions exactly.
