The Genetic Origins of Modern Bulgarians

Modern Bulgaria speaks a Slavic language. Yet the state itself was founded by the Bulgars, a people most historians classify as Turkic-speaking. Before either arrived, the Balkans were already home to the descendants of the ancient Thracians. So which of these groups left the deepest mark on the people living in Bulgaria today? For centuries, historians tried to answer that question through chronicles, language, and archaeology. Today, genetics offers a different approach. Ancient DNA allows us to compare modern Bulgarians with Neolithic farmers, Bronze Age steppe peoples, Thracians, Slavic migrants, and the Proto-Bulgars themselves. The results reveal a story far more complex than a single origin—and challenge some of the most persistent assumptions about Bulgarian ancestry.
