Reconstructing a VIKING Tunic from Hedeby | Pattern and Sewing (Ep. 28)

But still at least for some of the fragments from Hedeby there is no signs of the classic pattern. The sleeve fragment (that sadly I did not use) I will definitely come back to eventually. I actually did recreate it in a tunic I made 2 years ago. I also learned that the pocket could be interpreted as reinforced opening. Then knifes or purses worn in a belt underneath could be pulled through when needed. I would love to try that out on a future version of the Hedeby Tunic. EDIT II: This is not a classic tutorial video, and you will need to look at the fragments yourself, maybe check up on the stitches and demonstrations (Youtube is very helpful) to be able to sew along. The last fragment I show of the possible low part of the upper section could not have been what I thought. It is clearly the bottom of a piece of clothing if you look closely. Nothing was attached. Pattern Making: If you do not have a tunic to measure from and base your pattern of off, a shirt could do. Use it to measure things like arm width at wrist and shoulder, waist, neck opening needed for your head etc. Maybe start to draw a generic pattern and then extend it with the added skirt, the curved side panels in the upper section and the curves added to the sleeve and removed from the torso. If in doubt use an old bedcover and machine sew your first draft together and adjust until you are happy with the result. It truly is remarkable how much information she can get out of those fragments - I waited 4 months to borrow this book from the National Library of Denmark and it was definitely worth it. Besides a possible tunic other fragments appear to cover everything from leg wraps, dresses, apon dresses, open jackets, pants, braies and a vest. I also used inspiration from fellow reenactors and their interpretations of the fragments to make up my pattern.
