Photo Deconstruction: Vintage Beauty Photography using a Flag

Join me in exploring my new "Photo Deconstruction" series where I select one of my photographs and share the elements that work together to bring that shot to life. I share inspiration, lighting, behind the scenes images, before/after post-processing and more. In this video I deconstruct a high contrast black and white beauty image. Many photographers are afraid of hard light, but it can be such a powerful tool especially when creating more vintage-inspired imagery. For this shot I use a bare bulb (no modifier) to create an extremely hard main light. Then, I added a flag (piece of cinefoil) to cast a crisp shadow onto the model’s face. A second light with a grid is used on the background to create a beautiful gradient and glow of light behind the model, separating her from the background.
