The Magnus Scene Proves Fandom Doesn't Believe Male Victims | The Vampire Lestat

The Magnus scene in Ep 3 of The Vampire Lestat prompted a surprising discussion online. While many viewers saw the Magnus scene as depicting sexual violence, others questioned that reading, or worried that recognising Lestat as a victim somehow changed how we should judge him. In this essay, I explore why audiences often struggle to recognise male victims and our tendency to sort fictional characters into fixed moral categories. Once someone has been labelled "the villain", recognising their victimhood becomes surprisingly difficult. Drawing on Anne Rice's novels, victimology, media studies and the series itself, I explore why Lestat's assault provokes such a different response to Claudia's, why male victims are often treated differently, and what Interview with the Vampire is trying to say about trauma, morality and empathy.
