Augustus and the Roman Army - the first emperor and the creation of the professional army

We take a look at Caesar Augustus, the first emperor (or princeps) of Rome and the great nephew of Julius Caesar. Anicent sources - and Shakespeare and Hollywood - depict him as politician and no soldier in contrast to Mark Antony. How true is this? More importantly, how did the man who created the imperial system and re-shaped society change the Roman army? This video is based on a talk I gave in 2014 at the Roman Legionary Museum in Caerleon - a museum and adjacent sites, well worth a visit for anyone in or near South Wales.
