MARCUS AGRIPPA - The Man who made Augustus Roman Emperor
Marcus Agrippa is the emperor who was never emperor. The man who made Augustus and stood by his side, facilitating the longest and one of the most successful reigns in Rome's history. Born to a poor equestrian family out in the sticks, he enlisted in the army and caught the eye of none other than Julius Caesar. Sent off to study in Greece with his then-nephew Octavian, Agrippa's promise was such that he never left the future emperor's side. He became an incredibly successful military leader on land and sea, and without him, Augustus would probably have never beaten Marc Antony to rise to power. As admiral and general, none could best him. On top of that Agrippa was a talented architect, geographer and writer - he even built the original pantheon and was so famous that even when the one we see today was built under Hadrian, it still bears his name! He lived a dangerous but rich life, and beyond his military victories did much in service of the Roman people, providing fresh water, food and quality infrastructure.
