To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Amami City’s incorporation, the 62nd Amami Matsuri brought the island’s heart to life with Hachigatsu Odori, a traditional dance passed down through generations. On the night of 2 August 2025, locals from shima (village communities), members of hometown associations, and island-born residents returned to Naze to dance with the rhythms and emotions inherited from their ancestors. Visitors, too, joined the circle — hand in hand with locals — creating a moving scene that has become a cherished summer tradition in Amami. This living culture still breathes, still pulses, still dances. 🏝 What is Amami Matsuri? Amami Matsuri is the largest summer festival in Amami City, situated on the picturesque island of Amami Ōshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. This lively celebration showcases a unique fusion of island customs—from the exhilarating Funakogi boat race to the evocative Hachigatsu Odori (August Dance), alongside colourful parades that sweep through the city streets.
