Was bedeutet es, wenn die Bevölkerung schrumpft? | SRFglobal | SRF

More and more governments are warning of population decline. Birth rates are falling in many countries, and the global population is expected to begin shrinking by 2100. Currently, there are around 8.1 billion people on the planet, and the 9 billion mark is expected to be surpassed in the next decade. However, according to many forecasts, the global population will reach its absolute maximum by 2100 – and humanity will begin to decline. In China, Japan, and also in most European countries and the USA, this trend reversal has long since begun. More and more governments are trying to increase the birth rate in very different ways, but almost everywhere with limited success. And the decline is likely to be even more pronounced globally than previously thought. That's according to a research group that recently published its findings in the journal "The Lancet." They warn of "far-reaching economic and social consequences." How did they arrive at this conclusion? These and other questions are discussed by host Sebastian Ramspeck with sociologist and demographer Sarah Brauner-Otto, author and demographer Paul Morland, and Hans Groth from the St. Gallen World Demographic & Ageing Forum.
