Lee believes that his counter-offensive plan has not been uncovered, and so on Thursday, June 26th, 1862, begins his attack against the Union Army of the Potomac's right flank north of the Chickahominy River. Lee plans to use Stonewall Jackson's Command and A. P. Hill's Light Division to attack the forces of Major General Fitz John Porter's V Corps dug in along Beaver Dam Creek near Mechanicsville. However, much to Lee's frustration, most of his carefully-laid plans go awry from the start. Jackson's Command gets lost in its march towards Mechanicsville, and A. P. Hill is left waiting under artillery fire. By late afternoon, A. P. Hill impatiently launches his division against the entrenched Federals behind Beaver Dam Creek, leading to a bloody repulse that evening in the second of the Seven Days Battles.
