When Is It Safe To Switch From A Walker To A Cane
You should start to transition from a walker to a cane when the walker is getting in your way and you are able to use the cane with a minimal amount of force. The cane is really just a way to touch the ground. The cane should not be used to support you as much as increase your awareness of the ground. Before completely eliminating the walker I would encourage you to consider trialing the cane during the late morning or early afternoon. Spend time at the kitchen counter practicing shifting your weight onto your surgical side.
