It is not only the most significant but also the most challenging section, pushing the dancer’s skills to their limits. Varnam serves as the centerpiece, illuminating the full spectrum of this art form and culminating in a breathtaking technical climax. Known as a natya item, it seamlessly blends pure dance with dramatic storytelling in a captivating sequence. The first half showcases intricate jathis paired with expressive sahityas, while the second half transitions into melodic swaras, beautifully intertwined with their corresponding sahityas. In this Varna, a young maiden (nayika) opens her heart to her sakhi, sharing her deep feelings of love and the overwhelming pain of separation from her beloved. She longs for the comfort that only Vishnu, the father of Manmatha, can provide, believing with all her heart that the Lord of Lakshmi deeply cares for his devotees.
