From the album, American Beauty (1970) Lyrics by Robert Hunter Music by Phil Lesh Produced by the Grateful Dead and Steve Barncard Recorded at Wally Heider Studios, SF The band: Phil Lesh: Lead vocals and bass Jerry Garcia: Pedal steel guitar Bob Weir: Rhythm guitar Bill Kreutzmann: Drums Mickey Hart: Drums David Grisman: Mandolin Robert Hunter: Piano (uncredited) This track was taken from the 2024 "Rhino High Fidelity" series. The album was cut from the original master tapes and pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Limited edition of 5000 copies The story behind Box of Rain: Phil wrote the music first, while his father was very ill and in the hospital. He took the music to Robert Hunter and asked him to write the kind of lyrics that would be "the kind of thing you would say to your father before he dies." Hunter listened to the music once and wrote the entire set of lyrics in about 15 minutes. The phrase, "box of rain" came from a dream Hunter had, and he used it as a metaphor for a collection of comforting thoughts you could give someone before they pass from this life Recorded on VPI turntable to Apogee Duet 3, to Garage Band and iMovie
