The Two Nights That Made Europe '72...And Almost Killed It
Grateful Dead Paris, May 3–4, 1972. Donna Jean Godchaux took fifteen hits of Owsley acid and hid under Keith's piano. Twenty-four hours later, the band escaped through a bathroom window in Lille. This video goes inside both shows: the origins of the songs debuted just months earlier, Donna Jean Godchaux's cosmic meltdown onstage while Keith Godchaux kept playing, the French union crew that pinned the Dead's cables under a lighting truss and killed the power, the sabotaged equipment truck, and the Lille riot that ended with Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, and the crew climbing out of a venue bathroom window while a sold-out crowd smashed the place apart.
