The South African Communist Party has effectively governed the country since 1994 without ever having to contest an election on its own. For the SACP to split from its long-standing alliance with the ANC now means the situation is far worse than we thought. COSATU’s decision to back the SACP over the ANC after the split could well be the final nail in the coffin.
