Carsten Wicke | Podcast Part 1 | No Geographic Map in Passion for Music | Rudra Veena
Rudra Veena player Carsten Wicke talks about his initial journey into Indian Classical music. Born in Germany, he came to India in the ‘90s around the time when the East and West Germany were united. As a child, he was trained in Western violin and vocal. Later because of a chance encounter with recordings of works by artists like the violinist N. Rajam and Zakir Hussain his interest in Indian Classical music began. He started learning Tabla from Pandit Anindo Chatterjee in Kolkata. Wicke eventually became fascinated with Rudra Veena. Since the instrument had already declined in popularity he was in difficulty finding someone who would be able to initiate him into the intricacies of playing the Rudra Veena. In this video he narrates the story of his meeting, through a Swedish student of Rudra Veena, with Ustad Asad Ali Khan, the legendary Veena player of the Khandar school. He also talks about how difficult it was to find a Rudra Veena maker or a Veena as the interest in this particular instrument was already dying because of the technical difficulties inherent in its structure itself and the old shops of Veena makers were closing down.
