The name is due to the devotion of the pioneers who had the habit of meeting on top of a small mountain to exchange information about their activities, pray and sing. In 1870, José Antônio Pereira of the Martins Pereira family was informed that in the region of Campo Grande de Vacaria in the state of Mato Grosso, he could obtain much larger areas of land, and he decided to take the risk and leave his family and property in the care of João Nepomuceno. To summarize, in 1875, João Antônio Pereira returned to the village of Monte Alegre to look for his family, returning to Campo Grande de Vacaria and becoming the founder of the city of Campo Grande-MS. The village of Monte Alegre developed with the arrival of new families and became a district of the municipality of Prata in 1843. On September 16, 1870, it separated from the municipality of Prata and became a municipality with the name of Turibaté, which was changed again in 1943 to Monte Alegre de Minas. Today, March 2025, the municipality of Monte Alegre de Minas has a population of approximately 21,000 inhabitants, with a territorial domain of 2,595.957 km², at an altitude of 730 m, and is bathed by tributary streams of the Monte Alegre stream that belong to the Paranaíba River basin.
