I want to tell you about life in Morrocoy and how we share that privilege by honoring nature. Its true essence. It's the story of a couple: Betina and Alessandro have lived for 30 years in San Rafael, the last hamlet in Morrocoy National Park. They made their home there because they are people of the sea and silence, of nature and travel, seeking emotional experiences. And because after visiting more than 50 countries, they understood that their life lay by the sea of Morrocoy, but in the mountains, to also enjoy the greenery, the silence, the contemplation, and to build community with their neighbors. They joined the school, the church, took care of the plaza, the lighting, the water, and even fed the dogs along the way. So every time they went down to the sea, they carried a can full of dog food that they offered to the entire canine population. They were the ones who had the only car in San Rafael to take people to the hospital or to resolve any emergency. They belonged to San Rafael. They were good neighbors. Everyone loved them, knew them, greeted them, and thanked them. Tuqueque Lodge is the name of their place. And it is a true lodge. There are only three beautiful cabins here, each with its own private pool or jacuzzi and a view of the blues of Morrocoy that takes your breath away because nothing obscures it. Large gardens, a corral for the turkeys, sheep, and long-maned donkeys that diligently come out to cut the grass so as not to have to start their engines and disturb the Octavian peace of the guests and themselves. This is a lodge for a maximum of 12 people; no more. That's the absolute capacity, as each cabin accommodates a maximum of four people, preferably adults and children. Alessandro considers himself a professional concierge. His workshop is stocked with the most diverse tools and spare parts so that any problem can be resolved immediately. From a water canister, a short circuit, or an air conditioner—he even has a spare one. Betina is the fairy of details, the tables beautifully set, the cabins warmly decorated, and the creator of the atomic chocolate braid and all the breads. Meals—breakfast and dinner—are a true event, with fruit, breads, arepas, empanadas, cold cuts, eggs in various forms, yogurt, and the three-course dinners feature surprising appetizers, succulent main courses, and desserts to die for. Guests decide whether to take the tours on the boat or on their own. We went with them. My children, Arianna and Gabo, my grandchildren Río and Teo, and I were there. Traveling with experts is pure bliss because we always went to uncrowded beaches and hideaways, where there's no loud music. It's about mingling with the pristine nature of a national park. That's what national parks are for, even though it's been so distorted in Morrocoy. My grandchildren, who love and value nature, were delighted by the vast array of blues of Morrocoy, on its gently sloping beaches, watching the birds that came to eat fish. Río drove the boat and the classic boat, kayaked, and also paddled. Teo rode everything he could. He enjoyed spending time with the farm's animals. He combed the donkeys and fed the sheep with his older brother. They bathed in all the jacuzzis and pools. It was three days of authentic and complete enjoyment of Morrocoy National Park, culminating in Médanos de Coro National Park. I believe in detours, even if they're just three hours long, as long as my grandchildren experience the joy and freedom of hurling themselves across those seemingly endless sands, and so they did.
