1938 Norton Big Four - 633cc - big single cylinder - at the col d'aubisque - [Onbaord - nice sound]

Hey, This is a quick ride in the mountains with my 633 Norton big four,. It is exaclty the same bike as the 16H except the engine. 16H bore stroke is 79*100 and 82*120 for the Big four. The power is the same 14 BHP but the torque is way more important on the Big 4 because of the very long stroke and the flywheels (25Kg on the Big 4). The big four has been made for sidecar, in solo it is more a tugboat. The engine don't take revs but you never change gear even in mountains. You spend all of your time in 4th gear. The bike start in second gear like other bikes in first. The 4th gear is usable from 30 to 120 kph. An electronic magneto is fitted on this bike. The engine fitted on the bike is from 1938. This bike was probably imported by Clement Garreau, the norton french dealer just after the WWII. He bougth the english army/military stock in France and made bike with it. He had so much stock that he stoped building norton bikes only in the early 70's When he ran out of spare parts the last bikes was made with french goodies (Magneto, dynamo, ligths).
