Conmemoraciones - Ignacio Zaragoza, el héroe del 5 de mayo (31/08/2022)

Ignacio Zaragoza was one of the most distinguished military men in Mexican history. At the head of the Eastern Army, he defeated the French militia, earning him the distinction of being the best in the world at the time, during the heroic Battle of May 5, 1862. Zaragoza was born in March 1829 in Texas, when Texas was part of Mexico, but his family emigrated to Monterrey, where Ignacio entered the seminary. However, he abandoned his studies for the priesthood, determined to join the military. In 1847, he tried to join the National Army to defend national sovereignty (due to the US invasion of Mexico), but was rejected due to his youth. He later managed to join and participated in the Ayutla Revolution, supporting the great Guerrero leader, Juan Álvarez, whose goal was to overthrow the dictatorship of Antonio López de Santa Anna. From then on, his military career was swift and notable, as he participated in important battles, always distinguishing himself for his courage and military skill in various conflicts, especially in the battle of Calpulalpan, which would mark the definitive defeat of Miguel Miramón and the Conservative army. Thus, he saw the triumph of the Liberals. President Benito Juárez appointed him Minister of War and Navy, but he soon left these positions to command the Eastern Army and participate in the defense of the country against French intervention. Zaragoza was 33 years old when he defeated the French army, considered invincible, defending the forts of Guadalupe and Loreto on May 5, 1862. Zaragoza died of illness (the typhus epidemic) a few months later, on September 8. Three days later, on September 11, 1862, President Juárez declared him a Heroic Honorary Member of the Fatherland, and since then, the capital of Puebla has been named Puebla de Zaragoza.
