This association arose because of the circumstances of her own life, including her mother's death and her father's mental illness, as well as the violent end to her own life. Dymphna was born in Ireland in the 7th century and was the daughter of a pagan king named Damon. Her mother was a Christian and had taught Dymphna about the faith. When Dymphna was fourteen years old, her mother died, and her father became mentally unstable and began to make advances towards her. Dymphna refused her father's advances and fled with her confessor, a priest named Gerebernus, and a few loyal servants. They traveled to Belgium and settled in the town of Geel. However, Damon eventually tracked them down, and in a fit of rage, he beheaded both Dymphna and Gerebernus. Today, St. Dymphna is still revered as the patron saint of those with mental illness, and her feast day is celebrated on May 15th.
