I’d Never Heard of This Organ Builder… Until Now!

It was great to have the opportunity to return to York and visit the remarkable two-manual pipe organ at St Chad’s Church. Built in 1891 by George Benson of Hulme, Manchester, this was an organ builder I had never encountered before, making the visit all the more interesting. The instrument has a wonderfully distinctive character and sounds superb within the church’s impressive acoustic. In 1997, the organ was completely restored by Principal Pipe Organs of York. As part of the restoration, it was relocated from the main body of the church to its present position in the west gallery, a perfect location that allows its rich and colourful sound to fill this beautiful building. My huge thanks go to Bob, who has played the organ here for many years, for kindly granting permission to record. Thanks also to Adrian for suggesting this wonderful instrument, and to the welcoming church members. NPOR Link: https://npor.org.uk/survey/N03914 🔔 PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, LIKE, COMMENT, AND SHARE!
