I have always wondered what the figures of the past truly looked like. And this time, while creating the likenesses of 37 queens, I looked at the history of Joseon anew. We usually remember the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty as the records of the kings. We view Joseon through the lens of the king's achievements, wars, politics, and stories of power. However, this time, I faced that history with a slightly different perspective. It was Joseon seen through the eyes of the queens—women who stood by the king's side but lived through the time of Joseon in a different way. Looking at it through today's eyes, these were incredibly young girls who underwent their marriages wearing those heavy and splendid ceremonial robes and crowns. Yet, before they could even get used to their roles, they had to pass away early in the prime of their lives or fade into the shadows of history. Some carved out their own destinies by confronting male politicians in the very heart of power, while others had to quietly endure their lives, bearing loneliness and sorrow even within the magnificent palace. Because history has always been recorded centering on the king, the suffering and choices of the women who stood by his side have not easily been revealed. Following the lives of 37 queens, I realized that the grand dynasty of Joseon was not merely the story of the kings. They, too, were human beings who lived through an era; some were loved, some were shunned, and others held their ground amidst the massive waves of history. Because their lives felt so poignant, I wanted to use AI to recreate the most beautiful and splendid moments of their lives, even though their lives may have been sorrowful. Occasionally, these images may differ from the image of a queen you may have had in mind. This is because it is easy to form preconceptions about specific queens while watching dramas or movies. Of course, this portrait I created also incorporates other preconceptions or imaginations. Nevertheless, I hope you will enjoy it with a relaxed mind, imagining the time when these women of the Joseon era shone the brightest and were at their most beautiful.
