We skipped the usual tourist spots and did some more alternative activities as well as just enjoying mooching about. We loved Chiang Mai and thought it was very liveable too, our thoughts on Pai were mixed - it was very busy and party orientated and we would have opted to stay further out of the centre and enjoy the mountain scenery more in hindsight. Personally we were not convinced that the brutal journey through the winding mountains to get there is completely worth it. We much preferred quieter alternatives like Chiang Dao.
