History and Distribution: Riesling is a natural cross between Heunisch and Vitis vinifera (wild grapevine). It was likely selected from wild vines in the Upper Rhine region. From the Rhine Valley, Riesling spread to most German wine-growing areas at the end of the Middle Ages. The first written record of Riesling vines dates back to 1402 in Worms. With over 21,000 hectares under cultivation, Germany has the largest Riesling-growing area in the world. Cultivation: High demands on the location; it requires sufficient warmth to fully ripen. It has low soil requirements, good wood maturation, and high winter frost resistance. Good annual yields and late ripening. Wine: Golden yellow, lively, delicately fruity, with a tangy acidity and elegant design. An ideal accompaniment to light dishes, asparagus, fish, and summer salads.
