Senator-elect Martha Chávez, from the Fuerza Popular party, asserted that a pardon for former president Pedro Castillo, who remains imprisoned for the 2022 attempted self-coup, would not be viable. During an interview on Milagros Leiva's program, "Sin Rodeos," she maintained that such a measure would violate the Constitution and represent an overreach of power by President José María Balcázar. "It would be an abuse of power if he does it; President José María Balcázar would be violating the Constitution," Chávez stated. She also argued that such a scenario would not have been possible during the administration of former president José Jerí, who was censured by Congress. "With Jerí as president, we wouldn't be discussing the possibility of releasing Pedro Castillo," she declared. Regarding Keiko Fujimori's upcoming government, the congresswoman-elect stated that she does not know who will be in the future cabinet, as that responsibility lies with the president-elect's technical team. She also clarified that she has not received any offers to assume a ministerial post and that, should one be made, she would not accept it because her priority will be serving in the Senate. "I hope to be on the Constitutional Committee," she indicated. ON ALEJANDRO TOLEDO Finally, Martha Chávez also commented on the situation of former president Alejandro Toledo and stated that he does not deserve a pardon. However, she noted that any decision regarding a potential pardon should be evaluated by President-elect Keiko Fujimori and her technical team, within the framework of the powers granted to the new government.
