I want to tell you something that still makes me cringe a little bit every time I think about it. For close to twenty years, I grew sweet corn the way everybody told me to grow it. Long straight rows, three feet apart, seeds every twelve inches, full sun, and a whole lot of real estate. I'm talking about giving up a hundred, sometimes a hundred and fifty square feet of my best garden space just for corn. And every summer I'd be out there in the July heat, sweat running down my back, gnats in my eyes, dragging the hose out to those sad-looking stalks that were maybe chest high if I was lucky. I'd side-dress with nitrogen, I'd hill up the bases, I'd hand-pollinate when the silks came in because half the time the wind didn't do its job. And at the end of all that work, all that water, all that space, you know what I'd get? Maybe twenty, twenty-five decent ears. That's it. From a patch that could have held my entire tomato operation.
