The Amish Watermelon Method That Grows 10 Melons in 4 Square Feet

I want to tell you something that still embarrasses me a little, even after all these years. For the better part of fifteen years, I grew watermelons the way I think most of you probably grow them right now. I'd go out there in late May, till up this enormous patch of ground, maybe fifteen, twenty feet on a side, work in some compost, mound up the soil, drop in my seeds, and then just stand back and let the vines do whatever they wanted.
