Searching for Amanita ovoidea, the UK’s rarest Amanita mushroom — a beautiful but toxic fungus quietly spreading north. 🍄 This week I go in search of Amanita ovoidea, also known as the Bearded Amanita – one of the rarest mushrooms in the UK. A striking white fungus native to southern and central Europe, it’s now beginning to appear further north – perhaps a quiet sign of climate change shaping our wild fungi. In this episode, I explore the holm oak woodlands of the south coast to find it, sharing how to identify Amanita ovoidea and how to tell it apart from common edible species such as field mushrooms (Agaricus campestris) – species that might confuse the unwary eye.
