The secret code to reading legal opinions and case law. IRAC and the Case Brief. Civics101.
Every lawyer learns a special code in law school, a system for organizing legal writing used by judges, lawyers, and legal scholars. This system is called IRAC, Issue, Rule, Application, Conclusion, and once you learn to spot it, judicial opinions from the Supreme Court down to district court become much easier to understand. In this video, using an imaginary, and simplified court case, I'll apply the IRAC framework to a case and show you how to break it up yourself. I'll also give another example of how to understand the legal definition of facts. As we get into 2026, and the news becomes increasingly wrapped up in the federal courts, understanding the law cannot be under-appreciated.
