LordKardok Plays - Ghoul School (NES)

I was worried going into this one. Ghoul School was made by the same people that made Bart vs the Space Mutants, one of the worst games on the NES. As a precaution, I gave myself infinite lives, but in hindsight, I could've probably beaten the game with the 5 lives they start you off with. Graphically it's a mixed bag, some enemy sprites are cool in design, but the overall design is... meh. The audio is actually okay, the sound effects aren't bad and the music is kind of catchy (gotta love that Toccata and Fugue in D minor shows up near the end of the game). The controls are okay, which was one of my concerns going into this one, because what makes Bart vs the Space Mutants so terrible is the controls, but here they are actually not that bad. There is some drift on movement but it seems tied to whether you are attacking and moving at the same time. So, for the fun factor, I gotta say, this game is playable, but if you want to play it, you need to get yourself a map. The difficulty of this game comes from the maze you have to traverse, and if you get lost, you'll eventually get bored or frustrated, or even run out of health restocks in the classrooms. But with a map, most of the difficulty goes away and it just becomes a test of knowledge against enemies and using the tools the game provides to get through hazardous rooms. Some people might think that takes away the fun, but it's not fun to play this game and not know where to go, the game doesn't tell you what to do at all, so don't torture yourself, get a map.
