Do not get drunk on wine... but be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). It is not a suggestion, it is a commandment. It is in the continuous tense, indicating something constant. It is directed to all Christians, not just leaders or ministers. The word fill (Greek: Pleroó): to complete totally, to supply, to make full, to satisfy, to perfect. Therefore, being filled with the Spirit is being under the control, influence, and direction of the Holy Spirit in all areas of life. I) How to be filled with the Spirit? 1. Surrender to God (Romans 12:1) 2. Obedience to the word (Colossians 3:16); 3. Life of fellowship and prayer (Acts 4:31). 4. Fear of God (Ephesians 5:17,18). II) Characteristics of one who is filled with the Spirit 1. Courage to witness and preach the word of God (Acts 4:8, 31); 2. Wisdom and character to serve (Acts 6:3); 3. Faith and spiritual authority (Acts 6:5,8); 4. Capacity to suffer for Christ (Acts 7:55); 5. Spiritual joy amidst persecution (Acts 13:52); 6. Kindness and faith (Acts 11:24); 7. Worship, gratitude, and humility (Ephesians 5:18-21). God doesn't just want saved believers, but believers filled with the Holy Spirit. It's not about "having the Spirit," but how much the "Spirit has you."
