Speaking in tongues since Pentecost has accompanied the experience of Baptism in the Holy Spirit. They play an important role in the prayer life and spiritual edification of the believer. TONGUES AS EVIDENCE: 1. At Pentecost (Acts 2:4); 2. In Samaria (Acts 8:17,18); 3. In Cornelius' house (Acts 10:45,46); 4. In Ephesus (Acts 19:6). Pattern: Conversion / Baptism in the Holy Spirit / Speaking in tongues. TYPES OF TONGUES: 1. Individual tongues (1 Corinthians 14:2,4,14); 2. Variety of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:10); Prophecy = Tongues + Interpretation (1 Corinthians 14:3-5); 3. Sign to unbelievers (1 Corinthians 14:22); THE USE OF TONGUES: It should be done with love (1 Corinthians 14:1); It promotes edification (1 Corinthians 14:4, 26); Everyone can speak (1 Corinthians 14:5). It requires faith (Mark 16:17); It is used in prayer (1 Corinthians 14:14, 15, 28); It should not be despised (1 Corinthians 14:39).
