The French Pensions Advisory Council (COR) has revised its forecasts for the deficit in the pension system upwards, primarily due to a sharper-than-expected decline in the French birth rate. In its new report, the institution estimates that the deficit could reach 2.4% of GDP in 2070, compared to 1.4% in its previous projections. In the shorter term, forecasts remain stable, with a deficit estimated at 0.2% of GDP in 2030 and 0.9% in 2045. To guarantee the system's long-term balance, the COR suggests, among other things, a gradual increase in the retirement age, which could reach nearly 68 in 2070 in some scenarios. This deterioration in the outlook is mainly explained by the fall in fertility, now estimated at 1.45 children per woman, as well as by adjustments to economic and demographic assumptions.
