Driving Lailai Expressway 4K HDR - Endless Bridges & Tunnels Through the Taihang Mountains

On this trip, we will be driving along the G9511 Lailai Expressway, a mountain highway that runs almost entirely through the heart of the Taihang Mountains. Often called the "Mountain and Water Gallery" Scenic Highway, it is one of North China's finest examples of how breathtaking landscapes and modern engineering can come together on a single road. Our journey begins at Yixian Service Area, on the eastern foothills of the Taihang Mountains. The mountains here are formed mainly from ancient limestone and dolomite, sculpted over millions of years by rivers and weathering into rugged ridges, dramatic gorges, and towering rock faces. Along the way, the exposed horizontal rock layers reveal the bold and distinctive character of the northern Taihang landscape. Leaving the service area, we continue westward, gradually entering the heart of the Taihang Mountains. To keep the highway's grades smooth while crossing this rugged terrain, engineers relied on an impressive combination of long tunnels and elevated bridges rather than following every rise and fall of the mountains. Time and again, the road emerges from a tunnel into spectacular open views, only to cross a soaring bridge before disappearing into the next mountainside. This constant rhythm of tunnels and bridges makes the drive both relaxing and endlessly engaging. Many of the bridges are continuous girder bridges supported by tall piers, carrying the expressway gracefully across deep valleys, ravines, and rivers. From the bridge decks, you'll enjoy sweeping views of the valleys below and the endless ridges of the Taihang Mountains stretching across the horizon. Here, remarkable engineering and magnificent scenery blend into one unforgettable driving experience. As we approach Laishui East Service Area, the mountains gradually begin to soften. The landscape transitions from steep mountain gorges to rolling hills and broad river valleys, and the number of bridges and tunnels steadily decreases. This final stretch is also one of the best places to appreciate the seamless harmony between the expressway's engineering and the natural beauty of the Taihang Mountains.
