EP34. CORNISH CABIN RENOVATION REVEAL | SEE THE BEFORE & AFTER

✯ Episode 34 ✯ Back in 2021, we (Alex and Toby) took on our biggest, personal renovation project to date – a tumbledown, Grade II listed mill set in 10 acres of Cornish countryside. Whilst design work for the main house continues, over the last year we have been transforming one of the outbuildings – a tired wooden cabin that had no insulation, dodgy electrics and heating, a leaking roof, and windows and doors that didn't shut properly. Destined to be our new work studio, a place for guests to stay and somewhere for us to live during the renovation of the main house – this was top of the priority list! We are absolutely delighted to say that the cabin renovation is now complete! We wanted this space to be a complete contrast to the main house, which is a dark (and damp) cottage so we can get a much needed vitamin D shot whilst at work! The new windows on the south elevation were a key change we wanted to make, as we were missing the beautiful views and that much needed extra light. I (Alex) am a big believer that your environment has a big influence on your mental health and wellbeing, so I wanted the interior to have a calm, cosy and relaxed feel that would support us in our busy and productive work life. This refurb didn’t come without its risks. The original building was a prefabricated, interlocking, off the shelf cabin, which was only designed to take so much weight. Lots of consideration was given to adding strength through the cladding and making sure the weight didn’t hang off the walls but was supported vertically through a new ring beam. It feels fantastic to have taken a fairly knackered, average, off-the-shelf building and turn it into something unique and practical and I’m not going to lie, we do stay over when the main house gets a bit too much!
