When I woke up from the anesthesia (it was very quick, in about half an hour I was fine), the doctor came into the room and told us: We got the 5 that were there. And me, 5? But were all 5 the right size? And she said, "Well, for now we've retrieved the 5 eggs, now go home, and we'll keep you updated." The next steps in the lab involve fertilizing the retrieved eggs with sperm and waiting for them to fertilize. Then, the doctor has to make a decision on whether to wait to place them inside the mother's body until day two or three or wait until day five. Normally, embryos are transferred on day +2 or +3, but leaving it a couple more days allows them to develop to the blastocyst stage, which is a complex cell mass that, by day five, is in perfect condition to implant in the walls of the uterus. So our doctor told us, "Let's try to get them to day five if they fertilize. We'll call you." This was a Tuesday, so I waited for the call. On Friday, they called me and told me that for now, the 5 eggs were still going. I was freaking out! Have all 5 fertilized?" I found it mind-blowing. My nerves really couldn't get to me. And they gave us an appointment for Sunday. Keep one very important thing in mind when choosing a fertility clinic. Ask if they would do it if the transfer had to be done on a Sunday! Although it may seem surprising, there are clinics that are closed on Sundays... here's some information that I think is extremely important. Well, on Sunday at 10 a.m. there we were, very, very excited and nervous. When we walked through the door at the counter (I'm telling you this as an anecdote), they told us, "You have to pay 1,000 euros. Are you paying now in cash or by card?" What? 1,000 euros of what? Hahahahaha. And they said, "You have embryos to freeze. How??? What??? We weren't even considering this option at all! Seriously??? Hahahahaha. I don't have 1,000 euros on me!" We went upstairs to the operating room; this time, no anesthesia was needed. They asked my husband if he wanted to go in, and he said of course he would. You won't believe it, but if everything went well, that moment was the exact moment I was going to get pregnant; it was important for both of us to be there. I still remember the biologist telling us, "ALL 5 HAVE FERTILIZED, AND ALL 5 ARE QUALITY A…" That was such an unlikely scenario that we couldn't believe it. 5 chances, my goodness. 5 to none!!! So she told us, "4 are already frozen, we've decided to only put one in because there's a good chance you'll get pregnant since the quality is so good. I chose the one I liked the most, the roundest one…" And they put it in, and we cried with emotion. And now, it was time to wait 15 more days… Girls, you can see that at this stage of our lives, the word "wait" is going to be used a lot!! And we went home with our little embryo inside me.
