Considerations regarding special boat types and designs: In this video, I'm referring more or less exclusively to rigid, folding, and inflatable boats. However, there are now many special and hybrid designs of these boat categories on the market. For example, there are so-called hybrid boats, like the Scubies from Nortik, which aim to combine the respective advantages of folding and inflatable boats, but unfortunately also their disadvantages. They are not as quick and easy to assemble and not as robust as inflatable boats, but also not as fast as a true folding boat. Nevertheless, these boats can be just right for certain uses. In fact, many folding and inflatable boats today already feature hybrid elements – such as folding boats with air tubes or inflatable boats with some rigid elements on the hull or keel. Special inflatable boats include the lightweight and small packrafts, which, while slow, are well-suited for whitewater and fit into almost any standard backpack. I have doubts about the long-term durability of so-called origami boats, such as the Nortik Fold or the Oru Kayaks, which are folded from a single sheet of plastic. These boats score points for their quick and easy assembly, but are still quite unwieldy when folded. They are also likely less suitable for heavy use and longer tours. Then there are modular kayaks, which are actually rigid-hulled boats that can be disassembled into three or more parts. These boats are usually made of polyethylene, such as the Natseq from Kayak Innovations, the modular boats from Point 65 N Kayaks, or the spectacular Pakayak Bluefin, where the modules can even be plugged into each other. Despite being disassembled, these kayaks are still far too large to be easily transported on buses and trains. Furthermore, these boats are even heavier than standard polyethylene kayaks. This negates, in my opinion, the significant advantages of non-rigid boats. Therefore, modular kayaks can only be true alternatives to folding or inflatable boats for specific applications. However, these boats can certainly be a good fit for some water sports enthusiasts; for example, for people who frequently travel in camper vans. Despite being disassembled, these kayaks are still far too large to be easily transported on buses and trains.
