These remote islands, located over 1,000 km from mainland Mauritius, sparked global attention, as long-term leases often lead to effective control. By 2012, Mauritius’ foreign minister confirmed offering Agalega to India in exchange for a tax treaty. Speculation turned serious when reports emerged of India investing $250 million in a secret project on the islands. Global media suggested India might be building a military base similar to the U.S. at Diego Garcia or France’s presence on Réunion. Though the islands span only 26 sq km, barely the size of South Mumbai and are underdeveloped, the secrecy surrounding the project raised eyebrows. When asked to disclose the agreement, Mauritius’ PM refused, citing a confidential clause at India’s request. This led to widespread belief that India might be using the island for strategic military advantage. Today, let's dissect, what is the reality of the infamous Agalega Project.
