The Arab Conquest of Persia: The Fall of a Superpower

For centuries Persia held its ground against Rome and Byzantium, then fell in under twenty years. And not to a foreign sword: the superpower was broken by what happened inside it, and the Arab conquest only finished the collapse. A draining war with Byzantium, a palace coup against Khosrow II, four years of civil war, and a dozen kings cycling through a shaky throne. The last of them was a child, eight-year-old Yazdegerd III, a king of kings who would spend most of his life on the run.
