Zu Marx' Biographie s.    • Adolph Bernhard Marx (1795-1866): Was Gott...   Da Marx, seit 1830 Professor der Musik, dann seit 1832 Musikdirektor der Berliner Universität, kein Organistenamt an einer Kirche bekleidete, illustriere ich meine Einspielungen seiner Choralbearbeitungen mit Ansichten aus dem Berlin seiner Zeit. Das Titelbild des Videos zeigt die Jerusalemkirche in Berlin, in der Form, wie Marx sie kannte. 1731 nach Plänen von Philipp Gerlach fertiggestellt, hatte die Kirche ursprünglich eine elegante Turmspitze, die, aus Holz errichtet, aufgrund von Baumängeln bereits 1747 wieder entfernt und durch ein Notdach ersetzt wurde. Dieses Provisorium, im Bild zu sehen, blieb dann bis 1838 erhalten. Eine Darstellung der Jerusalemkirche lag wegen des Titels des hier zu hörenden Chorals nahe. Daß Marx in irgendeiner näheren Beziehung zu dieser Kirche stand, ist mir nicht bekannt. Dann allerdings ging mir auf, daß das Kollegienhaus -- 1735 ebenfalls von Philipp Gerlach erbaut und eigentlicher Gegenstand des Stiches von Hintze -- das Kgl. Kammergericht beherbergte (heute befindet sich in dem Gebäude das Jüdische Museum). Beim Kammergericht war Marx in den 1820er Jahren als "Auditeur" tätig, bevor er sich von der juristischen Laufbahn verabschiedete und ganz der Musik widmete. Denkbar also, daß er die Jerusalemkirche nicht nur regelmäßig passiert, sondern vielleicht sogar dort die Orgel bespielt hat. Diese wurde 1723 von Joachim Wagner für die Alte Garnisonkirche in Potsdam erbaut und 1732 in die Jerusalemkirche versetzt (25/ii+P; 1754 Hinzufügung einer Pedaltrompete durch Peter Migendt). 1851 erweiterte C.A. Buchholz, dessen große Kronstädter Orgel von 1839 in der Aufnahme zu hören ist, das Instrument auf 39 Register. Beim Umbau der Kirche wurde es 1879 durch ein neues Instrument der Firma Sauer ersetzt. Marx gibt einen abweichenden Titel für den Choral: "heil'ge Gottesstadt" anstelle des üblichen "hochgebaute Stadt". Marx, a professor at Berlin University from 1830, then from 1832 its director of music, never worked as a church organist, so I illustrate my recordings of his chorales with views of Berlin as it was in his day. The beginning of the video shows the Jerusalemkirche in Berlin in the form in which Marx knew it. Completed in 1731 to a design by Philipp Gerlach, the church originally had an elegant spire made of wood. As it was threatening collapse this was removed already in 1747 and replaced with a simple provisional roof. It lasted until 1838 and is seen in the engraving by Hintze. Using an image of the Jerusalemkirche suggested itself on account of the title of the hymn. I am not aware of any special connection that Marx may have had with the church. Then I realised that the Kollegienhaus, the main focus of the engraving and seen on the right, housed the law court where Marx worked in the 1820s before abandoning his career in the legal system and devoting himself fully to music (dating from 1735 and likewise designed by Gerlach, the building now houses the Jewish Museum). So Marx must have passed the church often and conceivably even played its organ. This was built in 1723 by Joachim Wagner for the garrison church in Potsdam and moved to the Jerusalemkirche in 1732 (25/ii+P; a pedal trumpet was added by Peter Migendt in 1754). In 1851 C.A. Buchholz, whose Kronstadt (Braşov) organ of 1839 is heard in my recordings of Marx, enlarged the instrument to 39 stops. In 1879 a new organ by Sauer took its place, the church having undergone a substantial remodeling. The title of the hymn given by Marx differs from the traditional title ("heil'ge Gottestadt" instead of "hochgebaute Stadt"). I have discussed this in a pinned comment (German only). August Wilhelm Bach likewise published a chorale book for the Berlin hymnal of 1829. He uses the traditional title for his setting of this hymn.
