Even a king like Saul was not immune to anxiety. After the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, an evil spirit filled him with anxiety and darkened his mind. Seeing Saul's tormented state, his servants sought out a skilled harp player. They found David—a young shepherd who was not only skilled and mighty in music, but also possessed the presence of the LORD (14-18). Saul loved David, and David became his servant. Every time David played the harp, the troublesome spirit departed from Saul, leaving the king with relief and peace (21-23). Through this incident, we discover profound truths. First, God was present in David, His chosen one. Second, God is able to use music to soothe troubled hearts and bring peace. Music in the hands of one who is with God is not simply beautiful sounds, but a channel for God's living presence. Interestingly, before David became king, he was first called to serve a troubled king. God trained his heart not on the battlefield, but in the tension-filled palace. David learned not to defeat enemies, but to serve with gentleness and loyalty, even to those who would later become enemies with him (cf. 1 Sam. 18:10-11, 19:9-10). In our lives, God also calls us to bring calm amidst chaos—not with strength, but with hearts filled with His presence. Maybe we are not musicians like David, but every word, every prayer, and every gentle action can be the soothing tone and rhythm that other people really need. Through our lives of worshiping God, we can be a source of relief for anxious people and bring calm in the midst of a world full of anxiety. [RGD]
