Therefore, we need to sharpen our sensitivity to understand God's reproof before we make another mistake. Saul and his 3,000 men continued to pursue David (3). Once, Saul entered a cave to relieve himself, while David and his men were hiding in the deepest part of the cave (4). However, David only secretly cut off the hem of Saul's robe. He knew that the LORD would not be pleased if he laid hands on the LORD'S anointed. In fact, he prevented his men from attacking Saul (5-8). The Bible writer does not provide unnecessary information. If information seems unimportant, it means there is something to emphasize. A king would not enter a place alone. Therefore, the information that Saul entered the cave to relieve himself is given so that the reader understands why Saul was alone and helpless before David and his men. David could easily have killed Saul, but he did not. He simply cut off the hem of Saul's robe as proof that he had spared Saul's life (12). David was troubled because he knew he could have ended Saul's pursuit, but he also knew that the LORD would not be pleased with him. Although Saul was not a good king, he was still the LORD's anointed king. God often rebukes us when we are doing something wrong or when we are about to do something wrong, especially a serious one. Therefore, we need to learn to be sensitive when God prevents us, whether through our own troubled hearts or through someone God sends to prevent us (such as Joab who tried to prevent David from taking a census; cf. 2 Samuel 24:3). God always communicates with us in various ways. Therefore, let us learn to pay attention and understand what God is saying to us. May God's rebuke prevent us from doing evil and continue to do good.
