A new spinosaur has been rediscovered! In 2026, Paul Sereno published a study describing Spinosaurus mirabilis, a possible new species of spinosaurid from Niger. The incredible news quickly spread online, with artwork, memes, and spectacular reconstructions... but what does the scientific paper really say? In this video, I analyze the study in detail: the fossils found, the holotype, the famous nasal crest that would have made this dinosaur unique, and the diagnostic characteristics proposed by the authors. We'll see why Sereno decided to assign these remains to the genus Spinosaurus instead of creating a new genus, and what differences were identified compared to Spinosaurus aegyptiacus: snout shape, tooth spacing, pneumatization of the cervical vertebrae, and possible differences in the tibia. I'll also discuss the paleoenvironment of Niger during the Late Cretaceous, comparing it to that of the famous Moroccan Kem Kem, to understand whether this animal was truly less aquatic than Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. Finally, I'll address the most important questions: does the crest really justify a new species? Are the anatomical differences solid, or could they depend on the age and growth of the individuals?
