DID WE JUST LOSE SUCHOMIMUS?! | Spinosaurus Summer

Suchomimus is one of the most recognizable spinosaurs in the world. But it almost doesn't exist — at least not by that name. Meet Cristatusaurus lapparenti. A crested, crocodile-snouted predator from 112-million-year-old Niger, described in 1998 — more than two months before Suchomimus was named. And according to the rules of paleontological naming, if these two animals are actually the same dinosaur, Suchomimus loses. Cristatusaurus wins. And one of the most famous spinosaurs in popular culture would have to be renamed. So why haven't you heard of it? The problem is the fossils: a few jaw fragments, some vertebrae, and two thumb claws. Barely enough to go on. Some paleontologists call it a valid genus. Others call it a nomen dubium — a name of uncertain application, scientifically meaningless until better material surfaces. The debate has never been resolved. In this video: → Why Cristatusaurus lapparenti was named before Suchomimus → What taxonomic priority means — and why it matters → The fragmentary fossil problem: when is there enough evidence? → Could Suchomimus still be renamed? → How Cristatusaurus, Suchomimus, and Baryonyx are all tangled together ✅ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:28 Meet Cristatusaurus 1:42 The Fragmentary Spinosaur Problem 3:52 First Non-European Spinosaur Remains 5:07 Taquet's Gadoufaoua Expeditions 6:27 The Baryonyx Connection 6:50 Naming Cristatusaurus lapparenti 7:43 Suchomimus Enters the Picture 8:49 The Taxonomic Debate 11:15 Size Estimates 11:44 The El Rhaz Formation Environment ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚨 IMPORTANT 🚨 Make sure your account is not in restricted mode, so that you actually get notified of my videos when they release.
