Mapping the South bend Lathe slideways (Part 3)
In this video, I show you what I went through to understand how much wear was on this lathe bed. Surprisingly, only the two main saddle slides are worn to a level that require my immediate attention. This machine still functions to a reasonable level of accuracy despite the bed wear. All the slides have some wear, after 82 years, there’s bound to be some. However, the tailstock and headstock slides are all in reasonable condition, do they need correcting,… yes, can I fix it,… I doubt it. I must emphasis that I cannot remove the errors, that is only possible through a professional outfit, my plan is to try and reduce the error as much as I can, enabling me to extend the machines life on a tight budget.
