And the word sar is not a gentle word. In the Old Testament sar almost always carries militaristic overtones a commander, a warlord, a military authority. This is the only place in all of Scripture where sar and shalom appear together. Which means the peace Isaiah was announcing was never meant to be passive. The Sar Shalom is the One who actively conquers every peace-disturbing force and secures shalom. And notice how His birth was announced. Not by a single angel with a soft message but by a heavenly host. That phrase heavenly host was the ancient military term for an army. Heaven deployed its forces to announce the arrival of the Commander of Peace. The shalom He brings is not the absence of trouble. It is completeness, wholeness, well-being in every dimension of life, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
