SURVIVE TO FIGHT - WW2 Flying Equipment from The Battle of Britain
How The Few Survived - Battle of Britain Flying Equipment In this episode I look at the flying equipment that kept RAF fighter pilots alive during the Battle of Britain — the B Type Flying Helmet, the 32 Pattern Mae West life vest, and the 36 Pattern flying boots. I cover how each piece was designed, why it looked and worked the way it did, and what it actually meant for a pilot strapped into a Spitfire or Hurricane in the summer of 1940. The B Type helmet was standard issue by this point, built to house the pilot's oxygen mask and R/T equipment while still allowing enough hearing and mobility for combat flying. The 32 Pattern Mae West was the inflatable life vest that gave pilots a fighting chance if they came down in the Channel — a real prospect given how much of the battle was fought over water. And the 36 Pattern flying boots were designed for warmth and comfort at altitude, in unpressurised, unheated cockpits. I go through the details of each item — construction, purpose, and how they fit into the wider story of pilot survivability during the battle — and what they tell us about the conditions Fighter Command pilots were operating under. If you're interested in RAF history, Battle of Britain equipment, or the practical side of what pilots wore and carried into combat, this one's for you.
