“Blue Tiger” is not just any 8c+. It’s the King Line of Saussois: a magnificent blue streak that cuts through the Moreau wall, one of the most beautiful natural lines on this Burgundian cliff, once beloved by Parisians, now almost forgotten. In this eighth episode of Legendary Routes, Lucien Martinez revisits the route, which had only seen two ascents in over twenty years: those of Jean-Pierre Bouvier, known as “The Fly,” and Christian Roumégoux, before he returned to repeat it with Nico Pelorson. He recounts the story of a bet that became legendary: the 2,000 francs (or a car, depending on the version) promised by Lucien Berardini to whoever freed the line, as well as the reward that the first ascentist supposedly never received. He also reflects on the decline of this legendary crag, the hold that supposedly broke at the crux, and what still makes Saussois irresistible.
